Feroce Named 'Best New Italian Restaurant Opening Worldwide'

Feroce has been named the “Best New Italian Restaurant Opening Worldwide” by Gambero Rosso in the publication’s annual International awards for the best Italian food abroad in their “Top Italian Restaurant Special Awards 2020.” The restaurant, which includes the regional Italian concepts Feroce Ristorante, Bar Feroce, Feroce Caffé, and Feroce Pizza & Bocce Bar, is an inaugural partnership between Francesco Panella of Antica Pesa (Rome, Brooklyn) and Tao Group Hospitality, opened in March 2019 inside New York City’s Moxy Chelsea.

Gambero Rosso, an-Italian based publication established in 1986, is recognized around the world as the authority on Italian food, wine, and travel. The team prides itself on providing readers with the most up-to-date and impartial recommendations, with expert insights into the Italian way of life. This year marks the magazine’s third-annual “Top Italian Restaurants Special Awards,” which puts together the best Italian food around the world, and serves as the ultimate guide to the best Italian restaurants, chefs, and bars across the globe.

In the extremely competitive selection process, Gambero Rosso’s committee members review the list of nominations, which spans across five continents and includes submissions from over 600 restaurants. Only seven winners are selected in categories that include: Chef of the Year, Restaurant of the Year, Up-and-Coming Restaurant of the Year, Pizzeria of the Year, Wine List of the Year, Guardian of Tradition, and Best New Opening. This year’s winners include Italian specialists from Hong Kong to Copenhagen, with Feroce being the only winner for the United States.

In the announcement of Feroce’s win for “Best New Italian Restaurant Opening Worldwide,” Gambero Rosso, states: “Feroce wins hands down, in the multitude of Italian openings we monitored all over the world we chose this new ambitious project that’s surely accomplished and well made. At the base is true authentic flavours with excellent ingredients and a very Italian palate that’s otherwise very difficult to find in the Big Apple.”

Feroce’s Executive Chef Simone Panella, who accepted the award in Rome, expressed how humbling the honor is as the Panella Family continues to spread culinary diplomacy stateside.
